I am constantly trying new ideas out and share the ones that work. If they need a vast amount of preparation or do not lead children to write better stories, I don't include them. Inset tends to be very interactive with lots of laughter, talking and teachers doing things. It is suitable for both KS1 and KS2 and I can sometimes add a staff training session on the end of a writing day.
I am happy to work with individual schools or networking communities to work out a day that is right for your own situation.
RECENT INSET TITLES HAVE INCLUDED
BOYS AND THEIR WRITING - before I wrote Literacy in Action: Football (published by Routledge, 2010) I revisited all the latest ideas about helping boys write. I led seminars at the National Association of Writers in Education conference on the subject several years earlier. The inset reflects the journey I made.
CREATIVE OPTIONS AND DIFFERENTIATED SCAFFOLDS - this includes kinaesthetic ideas to engage reluctant writers and ways to make books so children can publish their stories. Following my time as writer in residence in a school in Tower Hamlets many of my ideas were further refined to make them accessible for ESL children.
RE – IT CAN BE BOTH INTERACTIVE AND INTERESTING - the resource book REactive Learning (published by Education Printing Services 2007) included many ideas to make RE intereactive and kinaesthetic. This inset session is the result.
