BUDDING WRITERS PARTIES ...take the stress out of your child's party and create something unique at the same time...
About two hours worth of story writing with up to 10 children. In that time they create a story, illustrate and self publish it in a book they make themselves.
Here's what you do...
1. Choose a party theme such as animals, pirates, princesses, knights, dragons, fairy tales, aliens or circuses (check out WRITING DAYS I do in schools for further ideas). The story will be based on this theme - which could be a fancy dress idea as well.
2. Consider who to invite and make sure they like stories; children will not have to write anything, unless they want to, but they will be part of a creative process that does not involve kicking a ball or twiddling thumbs over a hand controller...
3. On the day, with the children, I create a unique story based on the chosen theme. The children's own names could feature in it if they wanted (though there are never 'there were once five girls called...' stories). All I need is a space where children can sit and see what I am writing.
4. Children then make a book out of paper. I have a range of examples for children to choose from and I supply all raw materials (except the printing process - see 6 below). A table would be useful though I have made books on the floor before now.
5. I hone and edit the story on my lap top. I need about 45 minutes of peace and quiet to do this - a good opportunity for food.
6. The story is then printed (on your printer), one for each child. Children cut and stick the story in their books. They can either draw illustrations, front covers, blurbs, publishing houses, price and bar codes straight away or it home to finish later.
7. The party bag is the book.
